Lake George Late August

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Fished Lake George on a very hot summery day. The lake was busy with boat traffic as expected. Started the day fishing a deep hump; 30 foot hump in 64 feet. Right from the start the smallmouth were on the hump. I was fishing a drop shot catching smallies, the lake was breezy, drift were speedy. Moved to some sharp drops, off a shoals, points and shore line drops the rest of the day. Also drifted over a few flats. Continued to fish drop shot in 20 to 30 feet catching a mix bag of largemouths and small mouths. The average size of largemouths were in the 2 1/2 lb range, largest being 3lbs. Smallmouth were a bit smaller averaging around 1 1/2 to 2lbs with the largest being 2 3/4 lbs. All fish released. Air temp was 90, surface water temp 72. Enjoyable day despite the heavy boat traffic-but that is a typical weekend day on Lake George-got to expect that!

Smallmouth on the St Lawrence Seaway

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Took a day and went smallmouth fishing on the St. Lawrence in mid August. The smallmouth were off the main channel in 20 to 35 feet. Fished in the strong current with 3/4 oz tube head with green -watermelon tubes. Caught over 40 smallies in the morning. Weather conditions were sunny skies, warm temperature, water temp (surface) was 77 degrees. Fish were in the rock deep and current. The bite was solid, felt like the tube got heavy. fish were from a 1 1/2 lb to 3 1/2 lb. A great day!

Early August on Lake Bomoseen VT

Monday, August 9th, 2010

We fished for a good part of the day on Lake Bomoseen. The morning started off with very placid waters. We noticed many fish were breaking on schooling minnows. A top water bite was quite active for largemouths-a Heddon spit n image worked better than a zara spook. As the day progressed we fished weeds with Texas rigged creature baits, drop shot stick worms and jigs n pigs from 1/4 oz to a 1/2 oz. The winds picked up and we flipped the deeper weed beds and then then protected coves, again fishing the milfoil and finding bait. The day produced 5 nice northern pike, 17 largemouths and a few large rock bass. The largest bass only tipped the scale at 3lbs, the lake can produce much better; given the heavy boat traffic, a bass tournament on the lake and very windy conditons from 10 am on, the day was a productive.

Champlain At Ti-end of July

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Spent a few days getting ready for a tournament. Caught quite a few largemouths and a few big pike in the weeds. Largemouths were in 8 to 10 feet in tapered and scattered weeds mostly. A few nice fish in 5 to 6 feet and in the scum. Scum fish were not as plentiful and not as large. Most fish were caught on Jig n pigs & brush hogs.
Tournament day had 24 lbs plus with a 5.8 kicker, however my motor sucked in weeds and I lost my water pump and could not make it back in time for weigh in-BUMMER!! Such is life at times.

Hortonia-July

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

July has been great on Hortonia, however the lake association has applied it second application to kill the milfoil. It appears to be working much to my displeasure. The milfoil powderizes as you run a trolling motor through it. I have still been able to pull some nice largemouths and a few samller pike out of the thicker weeds. Many fish are being caught in open water between the larger weed clumps 6 to 10 ft. Some of the sharper drops are producing some very decent largemouths in the 12 to 15 foot range. The surface water temp varies from 78 to 82, even warmer in the shallower water.

Cedar Lake, VT

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

I took a quick trip over ot a very small lake with Matt a junior angler who can catch fish. The lake is a small lake ringed with milfoil. we figured we would chew the lake up in short order. It was a hot sunny day, water temp was 73. we started fishing the deeper edges of the milfoil and work out way in to shallow then back to the deeper edges, we caught a few fish but nothing significant. As the morning progressed we found large concentraction of 2 1/2 lb to 3lb largmeouths in 6 to 8 feet in the very thick milfoil and the taper weeds mixed with cabbage leaf weeds. We flipped jigs and creature baits. I fished heavy jigs, Matt fished light weights. End of the day we had just over 20 LMB and 4 pike. it was a fun day on lake neither of us had ever fished.

Northern Champlain June 27th

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Fished northern champlain for a few hours for Pike and then shifted to largemouth bass. Pike were cruising the shallows in 4 to 6 feet, then we moved to a hump with scattered milfoil. The pike were more active on the hump due to the bait fish activity. Caught 10 northern pike and 1 large pickerel. Had a huge Bowfin come up after my clients chatterbait but did not get hooked. All pike came on a chartruese and white chatterbait. Shifting to largemouth we fished stick worms-(green pumpkin) and flukes-(white/silver) through the milfoil, caught 23 bass, largest being just shy of 3 lbs. Weather was a bit breezy with sunny skies. Water temp 72 degrees. Watch a bowfin attack and injure a large sunfish. The sunny floated to the surface where the bowfin made a vicious attack and swam off with the large sunfish in its mouth.

Hortonia Opening weekend

Monday, June 14th, 2010

The lake was surprisingly busy over the weekend with bass fisherman, looked like a small club tournament was going on. I noticed that everyone was bank fishing. I spent the two days fishing deeper. I found plenty of good size largemouths in 9 to 12 feet of water on drops and around large weed clumps. Large northern pike were also mixed with the bass. I had fished jig and pigs, and stick worms. Majority of the better fish came on Jigs, smaller fish on the stick worms. Best 5 fish on Saturday was 17 lbs, Sunday easy 15lbs, all same size fish, no huge lunkers in either bag. Pike were aggressive, the best 5 pike ranged from 10 to 12 lbs over the weekend. Total fish for the 2 days was 38 bass, 12 northern pike. Lake conditions may come to a change soon as the lake is being treated for milfoil; Hortonia will be closed on June 21st for the application. Just for the record- I am 100% against such treatment on this lake.

Went out in heavy rain on Sunday witha young lady ( 13yrs old) to have her catch some pike and bass. She fished hard with a chrome and black rattle trap. Fishing from 6 to 14 feet, she caught 10 pike and 8 Largemouth bass. Larger pike was 6 lbs, largest bass was 3lbs. Despite the cold front a very successful day in the rain. By the end of the day there was no more chrome left on the rattletrap!!
