We were up on the Raquette River on April 17th, fishing under tough weather conditons, 30 to 45 MPH winds, where the Raquette river flows in to St Lawrence River. The water was rising fast and the current flowing harder every minute. The water was becoming more stained by the hour due to the heavy rains the night before. We were able to catch some smallmouth in the 3 to 5 lb range. We fished the areas that had the less amount of current flow in 2 to 6 feet with 4 inch creature baits on a 3/8 oz lead head in a brown/purple color and we fished a 1/4 oz green pumpkin shirted jig with an orange craw trailer. The bite was very soft and subtle but the fish inhaled the bait. The bite seemed to improve when ever the sun poked out throught the clouds (which did not last long). The Friday prior, 2 good friends caught 75 smallies in the same area all in the range of 3 to 6
lbs. The cold front in addition to muddy cold water with increased current had affect the bite. This is still an area worhty of great fishing!! Heading back on Friday to satisfy my ego….

Went out on Seneca Lake January 6th to film episode 13 of Lakes Region Fishing. The weather was cold and breezy with a south wind putting a nice chop on the lake, sky was must clear-bluebird witha few clouds starting to roll in late in the day,air temp 18 degrees, and water temp 40.9 degrees. Could not locate any schools of perch, so I fell back on my winter small mouth spots, caught 3 over 3 lbs, some samller one-keepr size. Even caught a large chain pickeral-6lbs and a large perch that must have been lost. All fish were caught in 25 to 35 feet on hair jig.

I treated myself to a morning of ice fishing on Christmas Day. Everyone was out of town so my Black Lab-”Seneca” and I ventured out on the ice to catch some perch for lunch. The day was cold and clear. Air temp was 20 degrees, ices was 6 inches. we spent only 2 hours, drilled 8 holes and found the perch in 30 to 35 feet. Nice eating size perch. Rotated from hole to hole as the bite lessened. Had a great day and a great meal.

I took the morning to sneak over to Bomo for a few hours, water temps was 45 degrees, morning air temp was 27 but the day was to warm up and be sunny. Started off checking a few rock piles looking for smallies. Nothing on them. Decided to go deeper than the 8 to 17 feet range and found the smallmouth in 38 to 42 feet. They were stacked up on the bottom. Contours were very irregular. Caught the first fish on a hula jig, immediately switched over to a jigging spoons and caught a bunch of samllies in the 1 to 2 lb range. The released smallies would begin to shut the school down, but as I moved away from one school I would come up on another school. Over all it was a productive morning a which made the chores I had to get done more tolerable. The largest smallmouth was just under 2 1/2 lbs.

A good friend of mine fished with with me while we filmed a show on the Mohawk river. The river was muddy due to previous rains and the river was full of floating debris. The water temps was 46 degrees. The weather was foggy to start the day then the day moved to a bluebird sky with warming temperatures to 70 degree. The bite started off slow, we were fishing a rock pile in 9 to 17 feet with a strong current, outside of a creek mouth. Smallies were hitting a hula grub and a hair jig. The were aggressive when hitting the hula grub on a 1/2 jig head, the bite on the 1/4 oz hair jig was a littler bite. The dirty colored water made it a tough day of fishing, the local report was that the fishing had been great and plentiful, but in the last several days the bite slowed down. we managed to catch 15 nice smallies and one walleye. Enough to make a show.

The weather was cold, windy and rainy. Just a bitter day- air temp was a high of 38, the water temp was 46 degrees. Despite the weather the day was successful. We caught some some great smallmouth bass. We filmed a show using only 2 baits; a jerk bait-pink suspending jerk bait and a smoke colored hula grub on a 3/8 oz jig head. We fished from 4 to 6 feet in rocks and weeds. The smallies pounded the jerk bait after it was pulled and stopped, while suspended on a five count the smallies would strike the bait with force. The hula grub; the smallies either mouth the grub and the weight of the fish was detected like hooking a wet sponge or they would “pop” the jig with a distinct hit. My guest was a 13 year old girl who put up with the severe weather and held her own in catching some slab smallies- over all a great day for ducks, fish and for fishing.

Pick the worse day to try to figure the fish out on Cedar Lake-however fish were caught. I only had a half day to figure out what the fish were doing and where they would be. The day was breezy, a bluebird day in fall, water temps in the lake were 56 degrees, colder along the shore. Milfoil was dying and laying flat on the bottom in most cases. Found the pike to be following, just being curious but not too aggressive. Largemouths were a soft bite with the exception of one that violently hit a soft plastic. Started fishing the tapered cabbage and milfoil that was still erect in 9 to 12 feet. Fished soft plastic with only a few bites, switched to a chatterbug with a slow retrieve and started to bang soem nice largemouths, the largest was just over 4lbs, the smallest at 2 1/4 lbs. Many pike were following but only being curious. Caught 3 pike, largest being 8lbs. Winds picked up, the bite slowed down, flipped a jig for a few casts, caught one LMB 2 1/2 lbs. Went back to creature baits, hit a few more in 10 feet. The deepest part of the lake is around 15 feet. The end of the day, caught enough fish to feel sated, considering the bright sky and breeze, it was not a bad half day.

I had a couple I took to Lake George to drop shot fish. The change in weather made the bite a little harder than normal but we caught quite a few smallmouth and largemouth bass in the 25 to 30 feet range. The highlight was the wife of the couple hooked and had a pickeral that was in the nine pound range. It was an unbelievable pickeral. It lept along side the boat then came to a rest along side, her husband could not get his hand to spand the width of the fish and then grabbed the line to lift out of the water, then “bink” the line snapped! This was clearly a lost NYS record. I have 7.5 lb Pickeral mounted, and my mount was a dwarf compared to the pickeral that was lost. The lost pickeral had a very bulging belly, very broad and long. At first I thought it was a pike but quickly realized it was a Pickeral. I think she is starting to talk to her husband again..

I took a half day of “me time” and went to Burr Pond with a fishing friend. The water temp had dropped to 67 degrees and 5 degree drop from last time I was there. The fishing was great. The largemouth bass had moved to the deeper edges of the milfoil and the scattered cabbage grass. Fished texas rigged creature baits with light slip sinker (not pegged). We caught nice fish all morning, the weather was clear and a slight breeze first thing in the morning. The bite was obvious- more of a scrape than a thunk, and in some cases all you saw was the line had a slight movement. all in all a great day!
